Drawing Books in Pen & Ink

3-week Zoom series

Books are deceptively tricky to draw. They ask for solid linear perspective to get the angles right, and thoughtful mark making to capture papery page edges and the curve of a binding. In this series, you'll learn the basics of one, two, and three point perspective. I'll provide highly edited reference images that simplify each book down to its essential shapes and lines, so you can focus on the techniques rather than sorting through visual clutter. You'll also explore how implied lines can suggest the texture, character, and personality of each book without overworking the drawing.

Wednesday , Oct 14: Linear Perspective 101

Wednesday, Oct 21: Implied Lines & Book Contours

Wednesday, Oct 28: Pen & Ink Book Portraits

Supply List

Required

• Fine-point black waterproof pen, such as a Micron 01 or 03
• Medium or bold black pen, such as a Micron 05 or 08, or a brush pen
• Sketchbook or drawing paper with a smooth surface, at least 9 x 12" and 70 lb (100 gsm) or heavier
• Pencil (HB or 2B) and a kneaded or white vinyl eraser
• Ruler, 12" or longer
• Printer paper or a scrap pad for warm-up sketches and printing your reference images

Optional

• Dip pen with nib holder and a small bottle of black waterproof ink
• Extra pens in a range of tip sizes (005, 01, 03, 05) for more line variety
• Watercolor or mixed media paper
• Masking tape to hold your paper in place
• A favorite book to draw on your own after class

Reference Images
You'll receive the reference images digitally before class. Printing them is optional but helpful. You can also keep them open on a second screen or tablet while you draw.

Zoom Setup
For the best feedback, try setting up a well-lit workspace where your camera can see your paper. If that's not possible, no worries. You can always share photos of your work afterward, and I'll be happy to give feedback that way.
